A 2024 Nature Plants study developed a timber-origin framework motivated by sanctions on Russian and Belarusian wood after the invasion of Ukraine.
The reference database contained 929 samples of Betula, Fagus, Pinus and Quercus from 11 Eastern European countries. Stable isotope ratios, trace elements and genus distributions were integrated with Gaussian-process spatial models and Bayesian inference.
Verification and determination are different tasks

Verification asks whether a declared origin is plausible. Determination predicts a likely harvest location without trusting the declaration.
The verification method rejected 40–60% of simulated false claims depending on spatial scale while keeping false rejection of correct claims low. These figures are test performance, not the fraction of real illegal shipments detected.
The determination model located harvest origin within roughly 180–230 km of the true location. That precision can support investigations but may be insufficient alone near borders or for legal attribution.
The framework is best understood as a forensic evidence layer to combine with documentation and supply-chain controls.
