The squirting cucumber, Ecballium elaterium, ejects seeds and fluid explosively when ripe. A 2025 npj Science of Plants study combined micro-CT, electron microscopy, force measurements and high-speed video to quantify the dispersal system.
Ripening changes the fruit-stem angle to about 53°
The fruit stem straightens during ripening and the angle to the fruit increases to roughly 53°, helping set the launch direction. The paper did not demonstrate the auxin gradients or gene-expression targeting mechanism described in the earlier article.
Seeds reached about 10 m/s and calculated distances of 9.7–12.0 m

High-speed videos measured ejection velocities around 10 m/s. Ballistic calculations produced distances of about 9.71–12.04 m, consistent with historical direct observations up to 12.7 m. Micro-CT also showed seeds arranged in six longitudinal rows.
Mucilage may lubricate launch and then become adhesive
Ejected fluid likely reduces friction during launch. The mucilaginous seed envelope then dries into a strong adhesive, with attachment forces up to 27.5 N.
Several highly specific numbers in the previous article—0.8 MPa internal pressure, cellulose-angle and lignin measurements, a 20% friction reduction, 18–22% sugar concentration and 3 GPa hardened mucilage—were not reported by this 2025 paper and have been removed.
