Rain affects plants in several different ways

Long leaf-wetness periods favor infection by some downy mildews, bacterial diseases and fungi, but not every plant disease follows the same rule. Powdery mildews, for example, do not simply require leaves to remain wet. Waterlogged soil can also cause root hypoxia, while nitrate may be lost through leaching or denitrification.

Lightning fixes nitrogen—but it is not a major modern fertilizer source

Lightning converts atmospheric nitrogen into reactive nitrogen compounds that can return with rainfall. This is a real part of the global nitrogen cycle, but a thunderstorm over one field should not be interpreted as a measurable fertilizer application.

Cucumbers are a useful summer lens

Cucumber aroma comes from a mixture of volatile C6/C9 aldehydes and alcohols rather than one molecule. Bitterness is associated with cucurbitacins and depends on both genotype and environment.

A bowl of chilled hiyajiru—with miso, fish, sesame, tofu, cucumber and herbs—is one traditional way to connect the season, the crop and the kitchen. Recipes vary by region and household.

The value of a microseason is not precise meteorological prediction. It is a prompt to notice the sky, plant condition and seasonal food while keeping cultural interpretation separate from scientific claims.
